SJMAG's annual series of presentations at the Mexican Heritage Plaza include professional-quality productions of well-established playwrights of color (i.e. Samm-Art Williams, August Wilson, Pearl Cleage, George C. Wolfe); and outstanding performers who attract African-American, Latino, and women audiences. In 2002-03, SJMAG began including a production by a nationally known artist or ensemble. The first was a solo performance piece by former San Francisco Mime Troupe actor Barry Shabaka Henley, whose Hollywood film credits include Ali, Devil in a Blue Dress, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Rush Hour and Life. In 2004, SJMAG presented the Urban Bush Women, an internationally recognized contemporary dance ensemble. SJMAG also annually stages a traditional Day of the Dead performance and parade. SJMAG co-sponsors these productions with organizations such as the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, 100 Black Men of Silicon Valley, and MACLA. Also, the annual springtime Floricanto is one of SJMAG's signature events. Young adults ages 13-20 compete in the areas of Theater, Dance, Music, Poetry and Visual Arts. The competition is a collaboration of SJMAG and the East Side Union High School District. SJMAG has been producing quality theatre performances for the past twenty years.
